Isn’t one of the great things about going on vacation that you get to splurge and eat whatever you feel like without lifting more than the weight of your cocktail to your mouth? Wrong! Well, maybe for a day but then the fun starts to wear off and the key lime pies and pina coladas become ubiquitous and less interesting. I’ve never been one for those kinds of vacations and if I’m sedentary for too long I start to get cabin fever & quite cranky. Raise your hand if you’re the same! I definitely had some anxiety about eating healthy and staying active before heading off on our extended “wandermoon.” How in the world were we going to stay fit without being able to run, surf, CrossFit, bike etc. etc. that we do in our U.S. lives? I didn’t pay too much mind and thought that we would be doing a lot of exercise no matter what and we’d still continue to eat healthy so it didn’t matter too much. But in the first weeks I got a little too comfortable with not being active during our road trip with lots of driving and the only activity being running between car & hostel to avoid the rain. I started waking up super cranky and not in the mood to do a whole lot and couldn’t figure out why. And then it dawned on me. I hadn’t done any physical activity and I felt like a schlub. So off to trek in the rain we went. And then I decided that I would make activity a priority 4 days out of the week. Obviously, this is easier in some parts of the world than in others. Especially when you’re dealing with extreme high or low temps. Check out how Mr. CN and I have been keeping up our active lifestyle over the last 3 months of travel.
I am not one of those people who does well sitting still. Sure I have my days where I love to lie on the couch and binge OITNB, but overall I am pretty active, though I have been (re)learning the art of sleeping in since we started our travels late August. But I still get the urge to move, explore and experience new things. You see, I have always loved to travel and dreamed of it. Did you ever play that game where you would spin the globe, close your eyes and point to spot and that’s where you would end up living when you grew up? Or write in your elementary school books ‘About the Author’ page that someday you would travel the world? I was a travel nerd.
I’m sitting on my porch in Koh Tao this morning, with ants crawling all over my screen, sipping on what I thought was a coffee, but rather ended up being a sugar bomb with a trace of coffee, scratching my 755 mosquito bites, and already starting to sweat at 730am. I was so angry last night as we were hiking up the Rockies of Thailand…okay maybe a bit of a hyperbole, but it was steep! Yet I cannot remember a morning that I woke up happier, of course I have a view of a still water through tropical plants and bougainvilleas with a great porch to do morning relaxation and yoga so that doesn’t hurt either. Before coming to Thailand we had been camping for the previous several weeks through the Wild Coast of South Africa & Botswana. We’ve been using some pretty rudimentary kitchen equipment and yet we’ve been able to maintain a plant-based diet so we’re pretty happy with how we’ve been feeling. And let’s not forget the treats, too! I was having a real hankering for some cookie dough and luckily we had all the ingredients on hand while at one gorgeous campground where the closest grocery store was an hour away. Have you ever wanted to live or study in another country? My advice: DO IT! A summer. A semester. A year. How ever long you can do it. I promise you it will be one of the best decisions you ever make in your life. Find a 2-week long language course or volunteer. I had an absolute love affair with Spain from the time I was 15 and took a trip with my high school to Andalucia. I was obsessed with speaking another language, pesetas (before the Euro), tiles, the people, the food, the beaches! Everything was within reach of my fingertips and I loved it. I studied in a small beach city, Cadiz, the summer after my high school graduation and then again my junior year of college on the Mediterranean side in Valencia (You know the oranges). After college graduation I moved back to Cadiz for a few months looking for work before ending up teaching pre-school at a bilingual school in Madrid.
