Essential oils are concentrated solutions that are extracted from plants containing medicinal properties through steam distillation or cold-press method. Essential oils possess highly beneficial compounds that are being used for curing several ailments and disorders. Today these oils are considered a significant alternative to medicines. 

Essential oils are commonly used as natural remedies for anger and irritability. Most of the essential oils have a strong fragrance that provide a direct impact on our emotions. The scent instantly goes through the olfactory nerve to the limbic system of the brain which controls the behavioral and emotional aspects. It normalizes the blood pressure and calms the mind. Inhalation of it immediately triggers the mood besides enhancing one’s ability and creativity.

How To Use Essential Oils?

Essential oils are available in highly concentrated liquid form and thus the oil can’t be applied directly on the hair and skin. It may irritate the skin with a long-lasting burning sensation. Likewise, they should never be ingested in any form. 

Diffuse Essential Oil

You may put a few drops of any scented essential oil in a diffuser and keep the temperature at the lowest level to deodorize your room. It provides a calming effect on the mind bestowing a fresh feel. You may even blend 2 or more oils together in the diffuser as well. Sweet orange oil, lemon oil, and bergamot oil blend together to give a refreshing citrusy aroma.

Use as Dilution

Always use essential oils in dilution with any carrier oil such as avocado, coconut, jojoba oil. The oils can be diluted in normal water for taking bath. The proportion of the essential oil should not be more than 2% of the dilution. It is better to avoid mixing the essential oil with any mineral oil as the compound of the oils may react and may cause damage to the skin or hair. 

Lavender, myrrh, white fir, orange, frankincense are uplifting essential oils, which are used in aromatherapy to massage on head and forehead to reduce stress. 

Can Essential Oils be Mixed with Other Essential Oils?

Essential oils work even better when they are blended with other essential oils. When two such oils unified together the preparation excludes the cons of each other and bestows incredible results. In this way, you can prepare a relaxing essential oils blend. But before mixing the oils you need to know which oils work well together. 

There are a few ways to group these essential oils.

By Fragrance

The sweet fragrance of essential oils makes people cheerful and happy. 

Every essential oil possesses a particular type of scent. Some essential oils scatter citrus aroma like citronella, lemon, bergamot, orange lemongrass, etc. On the other hand, some of them have spicy scent such as ginger, cinnamon, clove, pepper, etc. and some of them possess woody smell such as cypress, juniper, frankincense, sandalwood and so on. There are flowery and herbal scented oils too. 

For best results, blend those essential oils that come under the same type of smell to get a stronger yet effective aromatic upshot. Generally, extremely strong fragrant oils namely ylang-ylang oil are mixed with bergamot and grapefruit essential oils to make a perfect happy essential oil blend.

Essential oils are volatile in nature. It gets evaporated easily from an open container. Some essential oils evaporate very quickly within 1 to 2 hours like eucalyptus, spearmint, lime, lavender oils, etc. These oils are called top notes. Similarly, the oils lasting for 5 to 6 hours are called middle notes such as carrot seed, clay sage, chamomile, etc. Finally, the oils taking almost a day to vaporize are called base note oil such as balsam, myrrh, angelica root, etc. 

Blend those oils which fall under the same note group to get optimum results from aromatherapy. For instance, lemon, bergamot, sweet orange, peppermint, and ylang-ylang oils are the best oils for uplift. If you want to prepare uplifting essential oil blend, go for any two oils from lemon, peppermint, lemongrass, and bergamot oil. They all are top notes of essential oils.  

By Effects

You may group essential oils by its effects. There are some essential oils contain a higher amount of antioxidants. These oils help in detoxifying your body like peppermint, grapefruit, rosemary oil. Bergamot, clay sage, an tea tree oil bestow energizing effects. Conversely, rose, lavender, and jasmine are highly effective essential oils for happiness. When you are using essential oils for getting rid of a problem, then dilute those essential oils that provide similar types of effect to increase the strength of the essential oils.

Way to Inhale Essential Oils 

Don’t inhale the essential oils directly from the bottle as it may cause headache and uneasiness. Put a few drops of the oil on a piece of cloth or on your pillow to take the smell of it. Inhalation of essential oils in this way intensifies the quality of sleep. 

Put 2 drops of lavender oil in a corner of your pillow to get rid of insomnia. You may dilute two drops of eucalyptus or peppermint oil in a bowl of hot water to inhale it to clear nasal congestion and get relief from sinus problems.
