Vegan banana chocolate chip blender waffles + life without a phone

dsc02244Wake up. Check e-mail. Check Facebook. Post & scroll through Instagram. Wake up. Listen to the water. Snuggle with my hubs. Go for a morning snorkel. Lay in the hammock. There is no doubt which one sounds more appealing. And though the latter is only going to be available to very few year round, why not try and mimic our vacation life more frequently in our daily life? Naturally nourished travel: Coconut persimmon smoothie + 7 tips for staying active while traveling

Isn’t one of the great things about going on vacation that you get to splurge and eat whatever you feel like without lifting more than the weight of your cocktail to your mouth? Wrong! Well, maybe for a day but then the fun starts to wear off and the key lime pies and pina coladas become ubiquitous and less interesting. I’ve never been one for those kinds of vacations and if I’m sedentary for too long I start to get cabin fever & quite cranky. Raise your hand if you’re the same! I definitely had some anxiety about eating healthy and staying active before heading off on our extended “wandermoon.” How in the world were we going to stay fit without being able to run, surf, CrossFit, bike etc. etc. that we do in our U.S. lives? I didn’t pay too much mind and thought that we would be doing a lot of exercise no matter what and we’d still continue to eat healthy so it didn’t matter too much. But in the first weeks I got a little too comfortable with not being active during our road trip with lots of driving and the only activity being running between car & hostel to avoid the rain. I started waking up super cranky and not in the mood to do a whole lot and couldn’t figure out why. And then it dawned on me. I hadn’t done any physical activity and I felt like a schlub. So off to trek in the rain we went. And then I decided that I would make activity a priority 4 days out of the week. Obviously, this is easier in some parts of the world than in others. Especially when you’re dealing with extreme high or low temps. Check out how Mr. CN and I have been keeping up our active lifestyle over the last 3 months of travel.

Naturally Nourished Travel: Thai red veggie curry + travel thoughts

I am not one of those people who does well sitting still. Sure I have my days where I love to lie on the couch and binge OITNB, but overall I am pretty active, though I have been (re)learning the art of sleeping in since we started our travels late August. But I still get the urge to move, explore and experience new things. You see, I have always loved to travel and dreamed of it. Did you ever play that game where you would spin the globe, close your eyes and point to spot and that’s where you would end up living when you grew up? Or write in your elementary school books ‘About the Author’ page that someday you would travel the world? I was a travel nerd.

Naturally Nourished Travel Series: No-bake PB chocolate chip oatmeal cookies

Some days ya just need a cookie. And some days ya just need to eat a ton of cookie dough and leave the remaining cookies for others to eat. Amiright?

Before coming to Thailand we had been camping for the previous several weeks through the Wild Coast of South Africa & Botswana. We’ve been using some pretty rudimentary kitchen equipment and yet we’ve been able to maintain a plant-based diet so we’re pretty happy with how we’ve been feeling. And let’s not forget the treats, too! I was having a real hankering for some cookie dough and luckily we had all the ingredients on hand while at one gorgeous campground where the closest grocery store was an hour away. Things could have gone very badly if I hadn’t come prepared.  Continue reading Naturally Nourished Travel Series: No-bake PB chocolate chip oatmeal cookies

Naturally Nourished Travel Series: Mediterranean protein pasta salad + eating healthy on the road

When Mr. Craving Nature and I decided to go on a several month travel honeymoon, I knew that we would be giving up a lot of comforts. A bed (with a mattress), our car, and most of all, our kitchen. Luckily we eased me into it by heading to a major city first. For most people traveling may not be an issue when it comes to food. People take the opportunity to head out to eat and take a break from their usual regimen, usually treating themselves to some extra indulgences and libations. Hello, sangria and churros! Though the problem is when you are traveling for 4 months, eating out at restaurants can fatten you up while slimming down your bank account, even in cheaper cities and countries. Plus, exploring the grocery stores and markets is a fun way to note some cultural changes. Talking about the unrefrigerated eggs and milk. Grilled apricots + almond pistachio ricotta (vegan)

When I was younger I never ever dreamt about my wedding. To give you some background I never carried a blanky, but rather a pair of rubber pliers and a skeleton key. Yup, I was into my own thing and was always dreaming of secret, magical worlds to which I could travel and unlock my fantastical mind. I also use to dig mazes in a sandbox and take the mice that my cat caught and tried to make them run through it. I guess you could say I was not into the average girlie things. Maybe that was because my mom gave me a boy haircut and gave me all of my brother’s old clothes. I’m pretty sure I loved it.
